How I coach

What happens during the session

A coaching collaboration is a tailored process. You are always at the centre and the approach is attuned according to the topic, your unique needs and wider context. No two sessions are ever exactly alike.

You will mostly experience a lot of active, deep listening and asking questions, which sometimes may be challenging. But you always have a choice whether you wish to answer or not. Occasionally, we will do exercises, and sometimes homework.

Our sessions have a clear structure:

introduction with agreements, you state the goal or topic for the session, then we work on it and end the session with a recap and action steps if it is appropriate.

I follow the ICF Code of Ethics in my work and assure the confidentiality of the sessions.

Besides working as a coach I have also experience as a coachee, having worked with 5 coaches - 4 of them offering individual and 1 group coaching. I understand how it feels to sit in the opposite chair.

Methods and frameworks I use

The coaching relationship

01
Chemistry
meeting

To get a feel if we are a good match for each other.

I will introduce myself and coaching. You will introduce yourself and your topic or goal that you wish to bring to coaching and clarify any questions you have for me.

The chemistry meeting is free of charge and will last between 30-45 minutes.

02
Coaching

sessions

During the first session we set a measureable overarching goal and metrics for the duration of the coaching process.

A typical coaching relationship consists of

6-12 sessions, but in reality this heavily depends on the topic.

The duration of a typical session is 1-1,5 h and the interval can be weekly, bi-weekly or monthly.

03
Interim
check-in

When we reach midway in our planned sessions it's time to check in on how we are progressing towards the set goals.

If needed, we can course-correct either the approach of coaching, the goal or number of sessions.

After the check-in we will continue with regular sessions.

04
Recap
session

During the final session we will return to the set goals and metrics and see how far got.

I will also ask you a number of reflective questions regarding the whole journey which usually provide additional learning moments and create insights.

We will also get a chance to provide each other valuable feedback.

These are some of the topics and situations I have come across more often:

setting and achieving goals

time management

building new habits

gaining clarity

satisfaction with work life

life-work balance

career choices and changes

adjusting to a new role

becoming an entrepreneur

team dynamics and relationships

giving and receiving feedback

dilemmas and complex choices

finding and growing confidence

discovering and using your strengths

people pleasing and boundaries

mental resilience in the team

You might notice some of the topics mentioned above sound like material for therapy. In some cases, the same topic could be approached through both coaching and therapy, but in other cases, certain topics do require treatment and the intervention of therapists. As a trained professional following the ICF Code of Ethics, I will make sure to point out any situations where I feel it is in the client's best interest to seek help from another professional. The two disciplines of coaching and therapy could be complementary but they are in no case a replacement for each other. I explain the differences further in the FAQ page.
